Ross A. Curtis

Senior Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer of European Operations

Ross Curtis is responsible for managing the underwriting strategy, processes and standards for the Lloyd’s and European businesses of Renaissance Reinsurance Ltd. He was appointed to the Executive Committee of RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. in May 2010. Previously, Mr. Curtis was Senior Vice President of Renaissance Reinsurance Ltd. in Bermuda primarily responsible for underwriting the International and Retrocessional Property Catastrophe portfolios, along with responsibility for Ceded Reinsurance and involvement in the development of the Specialty Reinsurance lines. Mr. Curtis joined RenaissanceRe in 1999 as a Catastrophe Reinsurance Analyst and has played a significant role in the ongoing development of the Company’s proprietary Renaissance Exposure Management System (REMS©) and its portfolio analysis methodologies since that time. Mr. Curtis earned a Master’s degree (Honours) in Mental Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh.

 

Edward J. Cruttenden

Underwriter – Professional Indemnity Insurance

Ed Cruttenden is responsible for underwriting the worldwide Professional Indemnity insurance book for Lloyd’s Syndicate 1458. Mr. Cruttenden joined RenaissanceRe in 2010 and has over 17 years of experience in both the Insurance and Reinsurance market. He started his career at DP Mann in 1993, progressing to underwriting on both the US Casualty Treaty account and the Professional Indemnity Insurance account. Mr. Cruttenden then spent 12 years at Hiscox as Deputy Underwriter for the Professional Indemnity account. From 2005, he assumed leadership of this team and directed strategy. Mr. Cruttenden holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Leeds.

 

Ian R. Oakley, ACII

Global Casualty Treaty Underwriter

Ian Oakley is responsible for Global Casualty Treaty business covering Professional Indemnity, Medical Malpractice, General Liability and Financial Lines.  Ian joined RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 in 2009 as Head of Claims and Contracts, moving to head the underwriting of the Casualty Treaty book in 2010.  Before joining RenaissanceRe, Ian was with Aspen Re’s US Casualty team since 2002, managing the team and claims for the US Casualty book, as well as the development of hi-tech solutions for gathering and collaborating information. Mr. Oakley began his career in 1982 at Walsham Brothers, specialising in London market excess business. In 1984, he joined RA Edwards (Syndicate 219) and became Claims Manager working as part of the asbestos, pollution and health hazard claims coordinating groups. In 1993, Ian moved to DP Mann to manage the claims of the US Casualty Treaty and direct Professional Indemnity portfolios, focusing on Medical Malpractice, Lawyers Professional Indemnity and other Casualty lines. He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

 

Thomas J. Cox, ACII

Casualty Underwriter

Thomas Cox joined RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 in 2011 as a Casualty Underwriter.  He is responsible for underwriting the Worldwide Professional Indemnity Insurance book for the Syndicate.

Before joining RenaissanceRe, Mr. Cox was at Brit Insurance as an Underwriter for the North American Professional Liability book, in particular Architects and Engineers, Lawyers, Accountants and Insurance Brokers. In that role, he spent time in the US advising the London office on long-term strategy for writing casualty lines from Brit Insurance’s newly opened onshore offices. He was also responsible for co-building and influencing the technical underwriting systems that are still in operation throughout that company today. Mr. Cox started his career in 2003 as a US Casualty Broker with Aon, where he was responsible for North American Casualty Treaty Reinsurance business. 

Mr. Cox is a member of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society.  He holds Chartered Insurer Status and obtained Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) in 2009.

 

Charles A. Teale

Trainee Underwriter

Charles Teale is responsible for analysing and modeling the casualty insurance portfolio for RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458. Mr Teale is also involved in marketing and developing key relationships with brokers and clients. Mr Teale joined RenaissanceRe in 2009 in operations and moved to the casualty team in 2011.  He now works directly with the underwriters to support their analysis of the Company’s insurance and reinsurance portfolios.

Prior to joining RenaissanceRe, Mr Teale completed an internship program with Beazley, where he spent time with the investments and underwriting team developing an understanding of the business.

Mr Teale has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Environmental Geoscience from University College London and is studying towards becoming an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

 

Alex Shepherd, ACII

Underwriter – Property

Alex Shepherd is responsible for writing and managing the Direct & Facultative Property book for RenaissanceRe’s Lloyd’s Syndicate 1458. Mr. Shepherd joined RenaissanceRe in 2009 and has over ten years experience in insurance and reinsurance in both the London and Bermuda markets. Mr. Shepherd started his career at Sedgwick before moving to Guy Carpenter in London and then relocating to Bermuda where he helped set up their Facultative office. He returned to London to accept an underwriting position at ACE Global Markets before moving to Canopius to assist in the establishment of their Direct & Facultative book. Mr. Shepherd graduated the University of London with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics and a Masters in History. In addition, he holds the Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII).

 

Richard Marks

Deputy Underwriter

Richard serves the company as the Deputy Underwriter for the Direct & Facultative Property book for RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458.  Richard started with the company in March 2011 and has over 20 years experience within the London market.  Before joining RenaissanceRe, Richard was running one of the North American broking teams at Marsh, mainly placing Fortune 500 accounts originating out of the U.S.  Before joining Marsh, Richard was with Aon, where he was responsible for placing Caribbean business, and was a broker at Ropner’s and Brown Shipley placing U.K. business.

 

John Paul O’Leary

Underwriter – Property Treaty

J.P. O’Leary underwrites the Property Catastrophe book for RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458. He was earlier at RenaissanceRe Europe, spending three years in catastrophe modelling. Mr. O’Leary has worked as a broker in Aon Benfield's Non Marine Retro Team, responsible for UNL and ILW products, and as an underwriter at Hannover Re, responsible for structured underwriting. He holds a B.E. Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin and a MSc in Management Science from University College Dublin, Graduate School of Business.

 

Will G. Haddrell

Assistant Underwriter - Direct and Facultative

Will Haddrell is Assistant Underwriter with the Direct and Facultative team at RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 with focus on open market and delegated authority opportunities.

Mr. Haddrell joined RenaissanceRe in 2008 when he was based in the Company’s headquarters in Bermuda.  During that time, Mr. Haddrell was an Analyst on the U.S. Treaty team, focussing on modeling and risk representation of the underwriting deals.  Mr. Haddrell also had exposure to International modeling, as well as the analysis of ceded purchases, ILWs and cat bonds.  Mr. Haddrell moved to RenaissanceRe’s Lloyd’s Syndicate in 2010.

Mr. Haddrell holds a Master’s degree in Finance from Texas Tech University.

 

Jaymin K. Desai, ACII

Assistant Underwriter - Property Treaty

Jaymin Desai is responsible for analysing and modeling the Property Treaty portfolio for RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458. He works directly with the underwriters to support their analysis of the Company’s reinsurance book. Mr. Desai joined RenaissanceRe in 2010 as an analyst.

Prior to joining RenaissanceRe Mr. Desai completed the Lloyd’s of London graduate program where he was part of the exposure management and risk management teams.  He also spent six months with Arrow Syndicate working with the underwriters on the Company’s property treaty book.

Mr. Desai graduated from Cass Business School with a Bachelor’s of Science (Honours) degree in Actuarial Science.  He gained the Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) in 2011.

 

David A. Heatherly, CPCU, CLU

Mr. Heatherly is Executive Director of RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 and is responsible for overseeing the underwriting of Agriculture business.  Mr. Heatherly joined RenaissanceRe in 2003 as Executive Vice President.  He was instrumental in building the company’s U.S. presence and was promoted to President of RenRe North America Holdings Inc.  In 2009, Mr. Heatherly relocated to London to help launch RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458.  He was elected to the board of RenaissanceRe Syndicate Management Ltd. in 2010. 

Mr. Heatherly has 40 years’ experience in the insurance industry.  He started in 1972 at State Farm Insurance and then joined Foremost Insurance as Executive Vice President in 1984.  Mr. Heatherly received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Western Michigan University and holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designations.

 

Dominic R. Oldridge

Agriculture Underwriter

Mr. Oldridge joined RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 in 2011 as Agriculture Underwriter.  He is responsible for underwriting and portfolio management for all agriculture treaty reinsurance business for the Syndicate.

Prior to joining Renaissance Re, Mr. Oldridge spent 13 years at QBE as an Agriculture Underwriter. Mr. Oldridge has over 15 years of crop insurance and reinsurance underwriting experience, and has worked in the Agriculture industry for almost 30 years. Mr. Oldridge’s areas of expertise include the world-wide underwriting of Crop Hail, Multi-Peril Crop, Crop Named Peril and Forestry business on a direct, facultative and treaty reinsurance basis.

Mr. Oldridge holds a Masters in Agricultural Management & Economics from Reading University.

 

Peter J. McLoughlin, ACII

Head of Claims

Peter McLoughlin is Head of Claims for RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458.  He is responsible for managing the Claims team and incoming claims, and aligning processes and strategy with both RenaissanceRe corporate philosophies and Lloyd’s requirements. 

Mr. McLoughlin has over 13 years’ experience in the Claims market. Before joining RenaissanceRe in 2012, Mr. McLoughlin held the position of Energy and Property Claims Manager with Arch Insurance Company.  During his time at Arch, Mr. McLoughlin’s responsibilities extended to Marine and Accident & Health classes, across the company and Lloyd’s market.  Prior to Arch, he worked at Hiscox as the UK Property and Casualty Claims Manager.  Mr. McLoughlin holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) Degree in English Literature from Loughborough University.  He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
