Top Layer Re was founded in 1999 to underwrite reinsurance and retrocessional reinsurance for very high layers of catastrophe programs on a world-wide basis (excluding the U.S., and Caribbean windstorm). These layers are generally higher than those written by Renaissance Reinsurance. Top Layer offers innovative, custom-designed products and programs backed by outstanding financial security and strong claims-paying ability.

Top Layer is a joint venture owned 50% by Renaissance Reinsurance and 50% by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company (“State Farm”), the largest property-casualty insurance company in the U.S. Top Layer’s business is exclusively managed and underwritten by RUM, a part of our Ventures group, pursuant to a long-term arrangement and benefits from Renaissance Reinsurance‘s proprietary risk-modeling technology and disciplined underwriting expertise.

Top Layer is rated AA (“Very Strong”) by Standard and Poor’s and A+ (“Superior”) by A.M. Best.
